Why replace your sticky notes with something digital?

We all know those great walls of coloured sticky notes in the open-plan offices of three companies out of four. Useful for organising and dividing up work — but are they really THE answer?

It is true that those little pieces of paper let you do a number of rather practical things:

  • building a Kanban with whatever columns you like: it is easy to move notes from left to right as the project advances
  • an overview: available to everyone (as long as they are in the open-plan office), a wall full of sticky notes lets a team follow how a project is going
  • collaboration: in a meeting it is handy to build a Kanban together, dynamically and collaboratively

For all the flexibility of that solution, several limits are easy to demonstrate: a note can come loose and the information is lost, everybody has to be physically present to follow the project (which makes remote work difficult), only one view of the project is available, a complex and heavy project cannot be run this way, and so on.

What if we traded that handsome wall for something digital and agile, like a project management tool?

A collaborative tool has to take its inspiration from everything a wall of sticky notes does well:

  1. Impose no particular way of working: every team has its own goal and its own project, and the tool has to stay flexible
  2. Make collaboration easy: everyone should be able to reach the project easily and add to it as a team
  3. Allow a clear, colourful overview: colour matters in project management, because it gives you a clear picture at a glance

On top of those, a project management tool has to let any team build a simple or a complex project, remotely or not, with different views of it — by task, by team member, by workspace, by country… by just about anything that matters to you.

Would you like to see what your wall of sticky notes could become as an agile, reachable project? Get in touch, send us a photograph of your project with a few words of explanation, and we will do our best to suggest something. It is free and there is no commitment.

P.S. do not throw your sticky notes away — recycle them into some handsome pixel art around the office!
